I came across Dr Weather's books randomly, while Googling a medication my 10 year old son had been prescribed for ADHD. By then we had been through over a year of medications, psychiatrists, psychologists, evaluation.... and mostly a lot of agony. I ordered the books (I don't remember which one first, but I do recommend them both; this is not the place to skimp...) and read them.
Dr weathers takes a completely unorthodox approach to the genesis and treatment of ADHD in children. His books contain an explanation of his approach, as well as case studies. I found ourselves - my son as well as my entire family - in his descriptions...And so we made our way to Spokane WA for an intense 3 day session.
If you have had enough of traditional therapy - week in week out, not to mention the bills; if medication has been hit or miss; if you have a life to live and are weary of these ups and downs that seem fruitless - not to mention downright damaging to your child's self esteem and emotional (and probably physical...) well being - I recommend you do the same.
Every child and every family has their own story, and only Dr Weathers himself can tell you if you are a fit; but I can tell you this: after our visit to Dr Weathers last summer my 10 year old son is completely off all meds; his academic performance has improved, and he is socially and emotionally well adjusted. He is back to his charismatic, confidant self, and no "professional" or (mis)diagnosis will ever take that away from him again!
As I reflected on 2011 and asked myself what were the best decisions I made this year, Dr Weathers ranked high on the list; come to think of it, I should have listed him first, because now that we have our life back together it makes all our other good decisions possible...Thank you Dr Weathers!

I normally do not do book reviews, but I feel compelled to write this one. We have an 11 year old son who has been having difficulties in school since first grade. After prodding from his teachers who thought he had ADD, we took him to our pediatrician who agreed with that. Bryan was put on ritalin at the age of 8. For awhile he did better, but began to slip backward in the fourth grade. We took him to a couple of therapists, but that still didn't help much. About a year ago, I found Dr. Lawrence Weather's book, ADHD: Drug Free and Doin' Fine. The title caught my interest so I bought it. His explanation of what ADD is about floored me! It just made so much sense! His treatment sounded a bit odd, but I saw some other recommendations from parents who thought it was really helpful to their kid. I also liked the fact that the families were involved with treatment as much as the child was. My husband and I decided to take the plunge and made an appointment. We were VERY happy with what happened with Bryan! It has been 6 months now, and he is still doing very well in school. He had had difficulty with reading, but what we found was that anxiety was causing the problems. Once he got over that with Dr. Weathers, he took to reading all the time. We also learned how to be better parents and to use behavioral techniques to get his behavior in line. I would highly recommend this book to any parent with an ADD child.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dr Weathers second brilliant book on ADHD, May 24, 2011

This review is from: ADHD: Drug-free and Doin' Fine (Perfect Paperback)
This is Dr. Weathers second book on ADHD, As he told us when our family visited him, it captures what he learned in the 10 years of doing ADHD treatment since his first book.ADHD: A Path to Success: A Revolutionary Theory and New Innovation in Drug-Free Therapy. It expands on many of the ideas pioneered in his first book. He cites extensive new clinical research to support what was initially just clinical wisdom and experience.

His explanation of what ADHD is made intuitive sense to both my husband and I. We could see what he described as we watched our son. Once we understood the concepts, they seemed like obvious truths.

Far more important is how this ideas, treatment approach and continual post-treatment follow-up has saved our son without medication. Adam is so different than before treatment. He is not perfect, but he can now focus in class, has friends and is happy. We still have to work at being good parents. Dr. Weathers treatment followup software and regular email consultation makes us feel confident and keeps us on course. I would highly recommend his books and treatment to anyone struggling with an ADHD child.

After trying therapy, educational specialists, tutors, nutritionists, holistic medicine, chiropractics, PET scans, doctors and many other things, we found Dr. Weather's book. My husband and I read the book, and then as a family, we went for a three-day session with Dr. Weather's. The changes are AMAZING! After dropping the kids off at school, I don't worry all day that the teacher is going to call or send a note home. They are happy and doing better than just "fine." They are doing great. Dr. Weather's has re-focused our lives completely. I read in other reviews that some doubt the "research" behind Dr. Weather's approach, but the proof is in the results. I actually think his approach works because it is real life advice that can be applied in the home and school and not in the medical or psychological setting.

He is the first doctor who actually cares enough to talk with my children's teachers, follow up on a regular basis and provide advice and suggestions to improve things both in the classroom and at home. His book offers the same common sense advise -- you just have to read it with an open mind and take personal responsibility for both your child and your behavior. I think we all like to think we are great parents and are doing the right thing, so it is not easy to hear that our parenting might be reinforcing your child's bad behavior. If you read his book and try his approach, you will find that it works. At first it might be difficult to follow through, but it is well worth the effort.

I am not an expert, but all I know is that we spent an incredible amount of time and money with very little results. I wish we had found Dr. Weather's sooner because I feel like we missed out on some wonderful times, that were lost to "bad" behavior. However, I am so excited to see the future possibilities. I really believe, that Dr. Weather's book offers good advise on parenting regardless of whether you go to see him. It is well worth the read. Dr. Weather's is a genuinely committed to helping families. I can not thank him enough for helping us!

As our son went through his Kindergarten year, he had a lot of challenges. We had school administration and teachers gently suggesting we should seek attention or aspergers evaluations and treatment. We saw this carrying through other outside of school activities. We tried many "techniques" with a little success. We met with his pediatrician who immediately suggested drugs "to see if they could help." We were VERY close to going ahead with it as we would do anything to make his life better. Prior to doing this, I researched no drug options and came across this book. My husband and I read it and checked reviews of Dr. Weathers. The book gives very good insight into these behaviors and paths to success. After much prayer and consideration, we applied to Dr. Weathers and went for a 3 day therapy session. I cannot tell you how happy we are that we made this decision. It has now been over 6 months and his new first grade teacher looks at me like I'm crazy when I ask if there's anything we need to "work on" at home. He has yet to have one issue in school this year. When other parents talk about their child complaining about homework, I cannot relate. My son does his homework well (almost perfect) with no complaints. His behavior in afterschool activities is very good, not perfect, but absolutely in the norm for his age. I purposely waited 6 months to write this review, because I wanted to make sure the results were lasting. And, they really seem to be. I'm pretty sure there are parents in his school that think we now give him some kind of attention drug, and I'm so happy that it seems that way. I recommend this book to everyone -- parents, teachers, grandparents. It has truly been a gift to our family and my amazing son.

Dr. Weather's first book (Pathway to Success) was very informative and made perfect sense after spending 2 years reading everything about ADHD and after having tried every medication and having seen numerous doctors/specialists. We were in a desperate situation with our son and decided it was worth the money to go see Dr. Weathers and hope for a miracle. The experience was life-changing for our entire family - our son is now the happy, confident little boy he deserves to be and we now know how to continue to effectively parent him. The teachers, principal and school counselor are all awe-struck at the complete turn around in our son.

By N. Pickering

I originally wrote an extensive review of Dr. Weather's original book, ADHD: A Path to Success. This was shortly after our treatment with Dr. Weathers for our, at the time, 8-year-old. Before treatment, we took our son off his concerta and Trileptal, much against our psychiatrist's advice, who pretty much dismissed the treatment and warned us it would be detrimental for our son. Well, he was totally wrong and we never saw him again. We went to see Dr. Weathers for 3 days (I had 2 additional days for treatment). The experience turned our lives around for the better. We saw an immediate change in our son's behavior and his self-esteem. It was rough for a few weeks after returning home, but the help of Dr. Weather and techniques that we learned, we were able to keep control of the situation and go forward.

Today, 4+ years later, my son is now 13 and in 8th grade. He has continued to do very well academically and socially. He has a few issues he is still working on, but nothing as serious as before. Before treatment, he was aggressive, defensive, and oppositional. He would throw and kick things, harass other children, and refuse to cooperate at school. His grades suffered for it. He was on the verge of being sent to remedial school. After treatment, these behaviors completely ceased. Best of all, he has never regressed in this aspect. He is respectful and a great kid to be around now. Whereas before, bad as it sounds, I dreaded being in his presence most of the time, especially in public places. He would throw tantrums and be inconsolable if he didn't get his way or lost at a game.

Before treatment, we had researched, read many books, tried almost everything including behavior modification, supplements and vitamins, psychotherapy, occupational therapy, and finally, the drugs. Nothing worked. At a truly dismal point in our lives, I took a 2nd look at Mr. Weathers book (I had read it a year earlier and dismissed it) and figured it was our last chance. Of course, I researched it and corresponded with other parents before deciding to go. There were too many success stories to dismiss it. After reading Dr. Weathers book the 2nd time, I could see more clearly what was driving my son's behaviors. It was a combination of factors, but mainly learned behaviors and conditioned responses. Certainly not a brain or neurological disorder; and all potentially reversible without the use of drugs. It made sense to me. So we decided to consult with Dr. Weathers, who assured us he could help our son. He did help, not only my son, but me as well. I had a lot of issues too. Today, our family is at peace. We no longer have to deal with the daily battles and stress. Our son is motivated, maximizing his potential and, most of all, he feels good about himself. He no longer believes he ever had ADHD. He knows his actions are totally under his control.

This latest book builds on the 1st book and would be beneficial for those who have tried everything else and failed. There are many helpful suggestions in the book you can implement, even if you cannot afford the treatment in Spokane. I recently read this new book as a refresher and found it as easy to read as the first, with much more of the science and rationale explained. Also, many of the techniques taught in the treatment are discussed in this 2nd book. I would highly recommend both books.
