Disadvantages of Concerta

Serious side effects:

Sustained delivery can be helpful for kids with after-school activities and homework. Taking it only once-a-day eliminates the embarrassment when taking medication during school day or after-school activities. It is similar to adderall, and both may be preferred to ritalin because of their longer, more even action. This also means a lower abuse risk. It works quickly (within 30-60 minutes).

concerta is a reformulation of ritalin for sustained delivery. Like Ritalin, concerta "works" on children in the same way that related stimulants like Cocaine work on adults — sharpening the short-term attention span when the drug kicks in and producing equally predictable valleys ("coming down," in street parlance; "rebounding," in Ritalinese) when the effect wears off. Since both are methylphenidate, they are often referred to as "Kiddie Cocaine."

Disadvantages of Concerta

You can’t cut or crush the pill (or chew it) because that will destroy the release mechanism. If beads are chewed the full dose may be relesed at once, giving the child the full dose in the first 4 hours. This means you can’t adjust the the dose to account for mealtimes. Kids may not feel hungry until the entire dose wears off. It is best to take Concerta 30 minutes before a meal.
To prevent sleep problems, take Concerta early in the day, no later than 6:00 pm.

It comes in 18, 36, or 54mg tablets. Each of these lasts 12 hours and is intended to be taken once a day.

Most common side effects:

Headache (14%), upper respiratory tract infection (8%), stomach ache (7%), vomiting (4%), loss of appetite (4%), sleeplessness (4%), increased cough (4%), sore throat (4%), sinusitis (3%), and dizziness (2%).

Serious side effects:

Reduced stature, ticks, "zombie" demeanor, stomach aches, and moodiness. Some stimulants used for ADHD have caused sudden death in children and adolescents who had serious heart problems or congenital heart defects.

Concerta is an FDA pregnancy category C, which means it may be harmful to an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment.
