| Celexa Side Effects: |
Celexa is new selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) that is FDA-approved to treat depression, but is also being used in an off-label capacity to treat those with ADHD and aspergers Syndrome. There is very little evidence suggesting that Celexa is an effective treatment for these conditions.
However, it may decrease co-existing anxiety and depression. It is the drug that most selectively acts on serotonin of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI). It is generally more sedating than prozac and Zoloft, and less sedating than paxil.
Be careful to avoid taking Celexa for 2 weeks before or after using an antidepressant known as an MAO inhibitor. Drugs in this category include Marplan, Nardil, and Parnate. Combining Celexa with one of these medications could lead to a serious--even fatal--reaction.
Celexa is available in tablet and liquid forms. Take either formulation once a day, in the morning or evening, with or without food. Although your depression will begin to lift in 1 to 4 weeks, you should continue taking Celexa regularly.
In clinical studies, antidepressants increased the risk of suicidal thinking and behavior in children and adolescents with depression and other psychiatric disorders. Celexa has not been studied in children or adolescents and is not approved for treating anyone less than 18 years old.
It is recommended that patients consult a doctor and slowly decrease their intake of Celexa rather than stopping suddenly to avoid adverse withdrawal symptoms.
