The XR version of Wellbutrin allows a single daily dose. This provides even 24-hour coverage. . The therapeutic and side effects are the same as the immediate release version except that it has a lower seizure risk than immediate release form.
It is dispensed as 150 mg and 300 mg tablets
The starting dose is 150 mg /day i and may be increased to a maximum of 2 doses and no more than 300 mg per day. Same as Wellbutrin IR About 24 + hours. Single daily dose. Smooth 24 hour coverage.
Side Effects
Wellbutrin has fewer side effects than SSRI anti-depressants (Celexa, prozac, paxil, Zoloft) such as weight gain, blurred vision, dry mouth, indigestion, constipation, cardiac problems, and orthostatic hypotension than other antidepressants.
However, it may cause these side effects:
Seizures, Restlessness, Insomnia, Headache or worsening of preexisting migraine conditions, Tremor, Dry Mouth, Agitation, Confusion, Rapid Heartbeat, Hyperactivity, Dizziness, Nausea, Menstrual Complaints, Rash, Irritability, decreased appetite, and insomnia.
Call your doctor if you have: mood or behavior changes, anxiety, panic attacks, trouble sleeping, or if you feel impulsive, irritable, agitated, hostile, aggressive, restless, hyperactive (mentally or physically), signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat; more depressed, or have thoughts about suicide or hurting yourself.
Since Wellbutrin is a FDA pregnancy category C drug, it may be harmful to an unborn baby. It passes into breast milk and could be harmful to a nursing baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning on becoming pregnant or breast-feeding a baby.
Drug Interactions:
Avoid drinking alcohol while taking Wellbutrin. Alcohol may increase your risk of a seizure while you are taking Wellbutrin.
Zyban is another name for Wellbutrin and the combination could cause an overdose;
Anticonvulsants such as Dilantin (phenytoin), Tegretol (carbamazepine), or phenobarbital
Ulcer medication such as: Tagamet (cimetidine)
Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs).
