adhd - Drugs for ADHD
Many of the children I see have a history of starting on low doses of drugs. At first the results seem quite satisfactory, however in a few weeks or months the attention and behavior problems again raise their ugly head.
This usually means another trip to the pediatrician or child psychiatrist to find out what is going wrong. Most often, the suggested solution is increasing the dosage level. Again the child’s behaviors and attention come under control, for while. But, the cycle is repeated with temporary improvements, waning effectiveness and increased dosage. As the dosage increases, many times side effects do too. As the pattern repeats, a change in brand of medications may be suggested or additional medications added to control side effects,…. as yet “a bigger hammer” is used. The bigger the hammer, the greater the “collateral damage.” There is an upper limit for how far this cycle can go. Many parents eventually say, “no more” and seek other non-drug treatment. Some of those take part in my treatment program.
