Drug-free treatment of ADHD is a family effort

Though children are diagnosed with ADHD, it is really families who have ADHD. To treat ADHD, you first have to understand how it functions in the family system to know exactly where and how to intervene. When the family system changes, the child's ADHD improves.

I came across Dr Weather's books randomly, while Googling a medication my 10 year old son had been prescribed for ADHD. By then we had been through over a year of medications, psychiatrists, psychologists, evaluation.... and mostly a lot of agony. I ordered the books (I don't remember which one first, but I do recommend them both; this is not the place to skimp...) and read them.
Dr weathers takes a completely unorthodox approach to the genesis and treatment of ADHD in children. His books contain an explanation of his approach, as well as case studies. I found ourselves - my son as well as my entire family - in his descriptions...And so we made our way to Spokane WA for an intense 3 day session.
If you have had enough of traditional therapy - week in week out, not to mention the bills; if medication has been hit or miss; if you have a life to live and are weary of these ups and downs that seem fruitless - not to mention downright damaging to your child's self esteem and emotional (and probably physical...) well being - I recommend you do the same.
Every child and every family has their own story, and only Dr Weathers himself can tell you if you are a fit; but I can tell you this: after our visit to Dr Weathers last summer my 10 year old son is completely off all meds; his academic performance has improved, and he is socially and emotionally well adjusted. He is back to his charismatic, confidant self, and no "professional" or (mis)diagnosis will ever take that away from him again!
As I reflected on 2011 and asked myself what were the best decisions I made this year, Dr Weathers ranked high on the list; come to think of it, I should have listed him first, because now that we have our life back together it makes all our other good decisions possible...Thank you Dr Weathers!

I normally do not do book reviews, but I feel compelled to write this one. We have an 11 year old son who has been having difficulties in school since first grade. After prodding from his teachers who thought he had ADD, we took him to our pediatrician who agreed with that. Bryan was put on ritalin at the age of 8. For awhile he did better, but began to slip backward in the fourth grade. We took him to a couple of therapists, but that still didn't help much. About a year ago, I found Dr. Lawrence Weather's book, ADHD: Drug Free and Doin' Fine. The title caught my interest so I bought it. His explanation of what ADD is about floored me! It just made so much sense! His treatment sounded a bit odd, but I saw some other recommendations from parents who thought it was really helpful to their kid. I also liked the fact that the families were involved with treatment as much as the child was. My husband and I decided to take the plunge and made an appointment. We were VERY happy with what happened with Bryan! It has been 6 months now, and he is still doing very well in school. He had had difficulty with reading, but what we found was that anxiety was causing the problems. Once he got over that with Dr. Weathers, he took to reading all the time. We also learned how to be better parents and to use behavioral techniques to get his behavior in line. I would highly recommend this book to any parent with an ADD child.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dr Weathers second brilliant book on ADHD, May 24, 2011

This review is from: ADHD: Drug-free and Doin' Fine (Perfect Paperback)
This is Dr. Weathers second book on ADHD, As he told us when our family visited him, it captures what he learned in the 10 years of doing ADHD treatment since his first book.ADHD: A Path to Success: A Revolutionary Theory and New Innovation in Drug-Free Therapy. It expands on many of the ideas pioneered in his first book. He cites extensive new clinical research to support what was initially just clinical wisdom and experience.

His explanation of what ADHD is made intuitive sense to both my husband and I. We could see what he described as we watched our son. Once we understood the concepts, they seemed like obvious truths.

Far more important is how this ideas, treatment approach and continual post-treatment follow-up has saved our son without medication. Adam is so different than before treatment. He is not perfect, but he can now focus in class, has friends and is happy. We still have to work at being good parents. Dr. Weathers treatment followup software and regular email consultation makes us feel confident and keeps us on course. I would highly recommend his books and treatment to anyone struggling with an ADHD child.

After trying therapy, educational specialists, tutors, nutritionists, holistic medicine, chiropractics, PET scans, doctors and many other things, we found Dr. Weather's book. My husband and I read the book, and then as a family, we went for a three-day session with Dr. Weather's. The changes are AMAZING! After dropping the kids off at school, I don't worry all day that the teacher is going to call or send a note home. They are happy and doing better than just "fine." They are doing great. Dr. Weather's has re-focused our lives completely. I read in other reviews that some doubt the "research" behind Dr. Weather's approach, but the proof is in the results. I actually think his approach works because it is real life advice that can be applied in the home and school and not in the medical or psychological setting.

He is the first doctor who actually cares enough to talk with my children's teachers, follow up on a regular basis and provide advice and suggestions to improve things both in the classroom and at home. His book offers the same common sense advise -- you just have to read it with an open mind and take personal responsibility for both your child and your behavior. I think we all like to think we are great parents and are doing the right thing, so it is not easy to hear that our parenting might be reinforcing your child's bad behavior. If you read his book and try his approach, you will find that it works. At first it might be difficult to follow through, but it is well worth the effort.

I am not an expert, but all I know is that we spent an incredible amount of time and money with very little results. I wish we had found Dr. Weather's sooner because I feel like we missed out on some wonderful times, that were lost to "bad" behavior. However, I am so excited to see the future possibilities. I really believe, that Dr. Weather's book offers good advise on parenting regardless of whether you go to see him. It is well worth the read. Dr. Weather's is a genuinely committed to helping families. I can not thank him enough for helping us!

This review is from: ADHD: Drug-free and Doin' Fine (Perfect Paperback)

As our son went through his Kindergarten year, he had a lot of challenges. We had school administration and teachers gently suggesting we should seek attention or aspergers evaluations and treatment. We saw this carrying through other outside of school activities. We tried many "techniques" with a little success. We met with his pediatrician who immediately suggested drugs "to see if they could help." We were VERY close to going ahead with it as we would do anything to make his life better. Prior to doing this, I researched no drug options and came across this book. My husband and I read it and checked reviews of Dr. Weathers. The book gives very good insight into these behaviors and paths to success. After much prayer and consideration, we applied to Dr. Weathers and went for a 3 day therapy session. I cannot tell you how happy we are that we made this decision. It has now been over 6 months and his new first grade teacher looks at me like I'm crazy when I ask if there's anything we need to "work on" at home. He has yet to have one issue in school this year. When other parents talk about their child complaining about homework, I cannot relate. My son does his homework well (almost perfect) with no complaints. His behavior in afterschool activities is very good, not perfect, but absolutely in the norm for his age. I purposely waited 6 months to write this review, because I wanted to make sure the results were lasting. And, they really seem to be. I'm pretty sure there are parents in his school that think we now give him some kind of attention drug, and I'm so happy that it seems that way. I recommend this book to everyone -- parents, teachers, grandparents. It has truly been a gift to our family and my amazing son.

Dr. Weather's first book (Pathway to Success) was very informative and made perfect sense after spending 2 years reading everything about ADHD and after having tried every medication and having seen numerous doctors/specialists. We were in a desperate situation with our son and decided it was worth the money to go see Dr. Weathers and hope for a miracle. The experience was life-changing for our entire family - our son is now the happy, confident little boy he deserves to be and we now know how to continue to effectively parent him. The teachers, principal and school counselor are all awe-struck at the complete turn around in our son.

My son was showing ADHD and aspergers symptoms strongly through pre-k and Kindergarten. We kept hoping that maturity would improve things. We were asked multiple times to have him tested. We took him to two separate psychologists who diagnosed him and were ready to put him on stimulants and a myriad of therapies. Social skills classes, occupational therapy, speech therapy... We were doing it all to no avail. We were ready to put him on the drugs. I went looking for other options and found this. We were tremendously skeptical at first but read the books, researched emdr, called multiple references, and had many discussions with Dr. weathers. Still wondering if we were making the right decision, we went for treatment with Dr. weathers. It was truly life-changing for our entire family. The book explains how it all works... and it really does work. My son's behavior improved dramatically. His kindergarten teacher asked us the following year what happened to him. I truly believe she was convinced he would not make it at his current school. Now, two years later, the vice principal took me aside the other day and said "I am so impressed with your son. He is still quirky, but he is so sweet, intelligent, and well-behaved." I LOVE being taken aside to be told good things, rather than "he's distracting the other kids" or "he's causing trouble"

Using the basis of emdr (what caer does) has been helpful for all of us in the last few years. I feel so lucky that we found him when we did and did not go through all of the different drugs, dosages and therapies. When we left his treatment 2 years ago, I asked which of my son's therapies we should continue. He said to stop all of them and see if we need them. We have had no therapies since then. The cost and time savings have been invaluable to our family.

5.0 out of 5 stars  The best thing I have ever done for my family, September 6, 2011
I read Dr. Weathers first book after I read his second one, ADHD drug free and doing fine, because I like the first one so well. ADHD: a path to success describes Dr. Weathers own personal struggles with ADHD as he grew up in California. Grounded in his own experience he, describes how he developed a very different view of what ADHD is. Reading this book refreshed the understanding that I got from the first book I read. If I were doing it again, I think I would read the books in the order they were written. As you could read my review of ADHD drug free and doing fine, we went to Spokane to experience treatment describes in his books. We are so glad we did. Is one of the best things we have ever done for our family.

5.0 out of 5 stars  This was a "Path to Success" for our son and family, May 24, 2011

I tend to be a very skeptical person. Just wanted to put that up front. However, we were blown away with Dr. Weather's treatment of our son Adam. My husband and I were getting desperate. Adam had been a problem paying attention in school from day 1. His teachers practically insisted he be seen for ADHD. Our doctor thought he had ADHD and put him on strattera. Adam calmed down, but he just wasn't the same kid, and he hated taking the medications. I started searching for something else to solve the problem and ran into Dr. Weather's book, ADHD:A Path to Success (also check out his second book ADHD: Drug-free and Doin' Fine). It was really different than anything I had read. The type of therapy he described sounded weird, but his explanations of how it worked seemed solid. I made my husband read it. Both of us thought what he said about ADHD kids and what makes them tick made sense in a way that other explanations had not done. We corresponded with Dr. Weathers over a period of weeks, as we wanted to make sure this would work for us. Long story short, we went to see Dr. Weathers and we are so glad we did! His kindly manner put us at ease, but he was also very focused on what we needed to do. The changes in Adam have been dramatic. He is no longer on medications, and is much calmer and engaged in class. My husband and I need to continually work on how we respond to him. We messed up a few times, and Adam got in trouble a couple of time. Dr. Weathers is available by email to coach us through some hard spots. Also, the homework messenger program used with his teacher's participation has made Adam's behavior in school more consistently positive. I would highly recommend this book and Dr. Weathers' treatment to anyone with a similar problem.

This book offers a common sense approach to ADHD, that actually provides life changing results -- it is nothing short of amazing. Before finding Dr. Weathers, we had seen several therapists, educational specialists, nutritionists and medical doctors. There was little improvement and the progress was slow. Dr. Weather's advice and perspective led to immediate positive change. This school year has been a pleasure. We are no longer dreading calls from the teacher. Best of all, our sons are happy, confident and doing well academically. All these positive changes are happening without medication and weekly trips to the therapist.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just returned from meeting Dr. Weathers

June 27, 2009 By Julie Abadie

After getting over the shock that in 4th grade a teacher questioned if my son had ADD/ADHD ...I began to research. I had many questions, why had no other teacher asked this before? Why had I, an educator myself, never noticed this? Why could my son, Jack, sit for hours and read through instruction manuals and constuct complicated Legos structures and put together a 1300 piece K'Nex roller coaster on his own...but not complete paper pencil tasks in English???? How could he have developed ADD/ADHD suddenly? All of this flew in the face of what I thought I knew about ADD/ADHD.

If Jack was hyper and couldn't focused as the teachers said...why could he do the above things that obviously required concentration and self disclipline??? Why, Why why?

Dr. Weathers provided answers that rang true for me (and what I learned as a degreed teacher from Texas A&M) and more importantly for my child.
After reading of both of Dr. Weathers'books, and exchanging many emails to Dr. Weathers about Jack and our family, we decided to go visit him. It was the best thing I ever did for my child, our family and my marriage.

As Dr. Weathers books explain, children don't like to sit in a desk all day long and do worksheets. It is boring, and one can easily develop bad feelings/anxiety about the thought of doing this every day all day long...the desire to escape is strong, even if it's a mental esacpe, hence ADD/ADHD.
When you visit Dr. Weathers, you work through your feelings of anxiety, guilt, fear and anything else you are dealing with by using the EDMR technology. EDMR is a procedure has been around since the Vietnam War, and is highly a highly successful mode of thepary.

Dr. Weathers gave me answers to my questions and so much more! He helped my son work through his issues, and tweaked our parenting style a little. My husband even worked through a nervous tic he'd been dealing for 35 years! Pretty amazing considering we only spent 3 days with Dr. Weathers! But again, it's not magic, it is common sense. Tics are an outward expression of anxiety. If you deal with the anxiety you have no more tics. Similarly, ADD/ADHD is a result of anxiety if you extinguish the feelings of frustration and anxiety you can handle the task.

Read the books, email and ask questions to Dr. Weathers, and make an educated decision...I am glad I did! It was the best thing I ever did for my child and our family!!

By  Kyle's and Katy's Mom (Richland, WA)

We tried the approach in this book out of sheer desperation. We have two teenagers, one with ADD and one with ADHD. Over a period of 3 years, we had tried every medication available, with marginal results. The meds  helped, but they felt like a bandage on a gaping wound. The dosage we ended up with was too low to really do the job, yet we couldn't go higher and risk more weight loss or slowed growth -- at 14, my daughter was 4'6" and weighed only 62 pounds, and I suspected the meds were keeping her from entering puberty as well. I began searching for an alternative and found Dr. Weathers' book.

Reading his book, I began to feel hope for the first time that maybe we really didn't have to live with this forever. His theories made sense to me, and I saw my kids in them. Admittedly, the book isn't of much practical help by itself. It helps you understand your child, but you can't really implement the theories without going for his treatment. The good news, though, is that the treatment WORKS! We were desperate enough for a solution that we tried it, and it's the best decision we ever made.

It's hard to believe that four days can make such a difference. The kids have now been off their meds for 5 months and we don't miss them in the least. They have each gained 20 pounds, and neither of them exhibits the hyper, distractible behavior that led us to try the meds to begin with. In fact, their behavior, schoolwork, and social interactions are under much better control than they ever were with the meds. I highly recommend Dr. Weathers' book, and I even more highly recommend a trip to Spokane! You won't regret it!

Educational games are one of the greatest innovations in education. They are fun, cheap, self-paced and have built-in assessment. However, their potential is seldom realized because they are usually misused. Typically a child is told to go to his room and play his educational game for a certain length of time. That is, "go play Reader Rabbit for half an hour" per day. The child hears this as go to the rock pile with a sledgehammer and break big rocks into little ones. This is not very motivational or inspiring to a child.

Directions that I give to users of WebCAER are: "Whenever something bad happens, think of the feeling that went just before it. Go immediately to WebCAER and concentrate on that feeling. Be an emotional blood hound and try to follow the feeling back across your life to all the other times you felt a similar feeling." in fact, when someone gets upset, a standard mantra in every family should be to say to the upset person, "that is something you can work up with on WebCAER, now." Intensive treatment sets families on the right track by eliminating problems and providing knowledge of how to go forward, but the path of growth and health must be lived everyday.

There are five components to treatment follow-up. Long-term email follow-up, WebCAER, homework Messenger, the Goals Program and educational emails for parents and teachers. My view of treatment goes far beyond just simply resolving the identified problems of the ADHD, LD or HFA child. Resolving his problem is only the first step. The real objective is to help families become high functioning vs. just coping by getting rid of problems. The follow-up technologies provide additional tools to achieve more than just problem resolution.
